It was a memorable night on Wearside for the Terriers, with goals in each half from Michał Helik and Delano Burgzorg securing a much deserved win over Sunderland.
Dangerous from the off, Town could’ve led inside five minutes thanks to Jaheim Headley after Josh Koroma found him alone in the box, but quick feet from the Sunderland goalkeeper allowed him to smother the ball one-on-one and deny the Terriers an early lead.
Evenly match, it was Town who took the lead midway into the half, with central defender Helik nodding home from close range following a corner, with defensive partner Lees getting the assist with a nod back across the goal.
Sunderland equalised before the break from close range thanks to their captain Luke O’Nien, but thanks to a Player of the Match performance from Chris Maxwell, that would be the last time they would get the ball over the line.
Both sides pushed on after the break, but it was Town that found the winner. Pressing high, Jaheim Headley won the ball back and deflected in back into the path of Delano Burgzorg, who was between defenders. Striking first time from outside the box across goal, he found the opposite bottom corner, making his last touch before being substituted an important one.
The home side did push toward the end of the game as was expected, but the Terriers stood firm and brought all three points home after what was a strong and committed away performance.
