Despite one of their most exciting attacking performances of the season to date, two second half goals for Middlesbrough condemned Town to defeat in their final game of 2023.

Outplaying the visitors throughout the first half, all that was missing for Town was a goal, with Josh Koroma coming closest after rounding the goalkeeper outside the box before hitting an off-balance strike against the crossbar with the net at his mercy.

While the visitors had almost taken the lead through Jones before Nakayama’s goal line clearance, they did eventually go in front against the run of play through substitute Coburn, who had latched onto a through ball before lifting the ball over Chapman at close range.

Hitting back through Helik who found the bottom corner with an excellent wave of his boot from outside the area, the Polish defender is now on six goals for the season, equal with Delano Burgzorg who was missing for the Terriers on the night.

Unrelenting in attack, Town continued to lay seize on the Boro goal, with the away side hemmed in for large portions of the game. On a rare venture into the Terriers box, Rodgers was deemed to have been caught by Wiles by the official, with a sharp whistle and point to the spot following. Taken by captain Howson, his effort looked destined for the top corner before Jacob Chapman reached high and tuned the ball out for a corner, saving brilliantly.

Sadly, the resulting corner was turned in by the visitors, with Howson hitting a scruffy volley into the ground that looped over the defence and into the goal via the underside of the crossbar. Despite being a tough goal to take, Town bounced back and resumed their attacks almost immediately.

Pushing hard until the last seconds throughout six minutes of added time, it wasn’t to be for the Terriers on the night, who were clapped from the field after giving their all.
