Young Terrier talks ahead of Saturday’s game against Grimsby Town

Huddersfield Town Under-17 striker Robson Shipley was a part of the Wales Under-17 squad that made history and qualified for the Elite Round of UEFA Under-17 Qualifying.

Shipley moved to Huddersfield Town during the summer to join the Under-17 group after spells at Newcastle and Middlesbrough.

Since that point, the youngster had another international call-up for Wales following his debut in April.

“It was crazy, especially my call up for the Euros. I was buzzing, it was incredible,” smile Robson.

“I was at my Grandma’s and I got this phone call – I was more shocked than anything.

“To qualify for the Elites of the Euros, it’s the first time they’ve done it in four years.

“Just to be there was a good enough experience, but I got game time which was obviously even better, and against one of the best teams in the world.

“It’s just something that I’ve always wanted to do, to go away and play internationally, I couldn’t really ask for anything more.”

The striker was also keen to speak about how playing for Wales has helped him develop his game.

“It just helps you progress playing against players in different formations with different coaches – it just helps you a lot more.

“I can play a lot more systems now. I was used to playing 4-3-3, which is common here, but I played in a diamond for Wales and you just learn more positional stuff over there.

“It helps because then I can apply it to my game back here.”

The youngster has scored three goals since joining the Young Terriers and is keen to add to his goal tally.

“I’m really happy about that but I’ve just got to hope for more.

“I go into games and get behind the ball, try and stretch the defence a bit and if I get a chance to shoot, shoot early and test the ‘keeper.

“Obviously if I score it’s usually a good day!”

Shipley and his Under-17 teammates play Grimsby Town in the EFL Youth Alliance League on Saturday (19 October 2019), with the 11.30am kick-off taking place at PPG Canalside (HD2 1YJ).
