In the run up to Huddersfield Town’s 2019/20 season in the Sky Bet Championship, htafc.com will take a look at some of the most memorable fixtures against teams the Terriers will face – this time we’re looking back at Town’s dramatic win over Leeds United.
David Wagner’s side claimed all three points in the last West Yorkshire derby at the John Smith’s Stadium, beating Leeds United 2-1 in the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season.
With both sides occupying Play-Off spots going into the game, the match was broadcast live on Sky Sports and was watched by 22,400 in attendance.
The visitors created the first real chance of the Sunday midday kick-off, with Chris Wood firing at goal from a tight angle but Town ‘keeper Danny Ward was equal to it, saving low to his left. Collin Quaner then saw his effort from a similar angle denied at the other end by Leeds goalkeeper Robert Green.
It was the Terriers that made the breakthrough on 27 minutes. Izzy Brown showed great anticipation to divert Tommy Smith’s low drilled cross from the right into the back of the net.
The lead lasted less than 10 minutes, however, with Chris Wood equalising for the visitors shortly before half-time.
After a close second half it was Town who won the game late on. Aaron Mooy’s effort from range fell to Michael Hefele who was unmarked inside the box and able to turn the ball home to spark wild scenes both on and off the pitch at the John Smith’s Stadium!
As a result of the game, Town leap-frogged Leeds United into fourth in the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship table.
