Huddersfield Town Women win first game of their FA WPL Premier Division season

- Huddersfield Town Women 4-2 AFC Fylde
- Home game played at Stafflex Arena
- Second half goals proved the difference

Huddersfield Town Women kicked off their season in perfect fashion as they took all three points on Sunday afternoon as AFC Fylde visited the Stafflex Arena.

An all changed side, Glen Preston named debutants Olivia Conway, Olivia Harness, Dolcie O’Connor and Freya Walton in the starting side, with Feiruz Abdullahi, Scarlett McMahon, Aisha Nsagou named on the bench, who were all also involved for Town for the first time.

It would be a disaster start for Town though as Fylde broke the deadlock early in the first half, with a cross well controlled by Lackey as she fired passed Olivia Conway in the home goal.

The Terriers would not be behind for long as Kate Mallin found space down the right, laying the ball back to Britt Sanderson who swung an inviting ball into the box. Yasmin Mason nipped in before the goalkeeper could, swiveling to find Freya Walton free inside the box for a debut goal for the ex-Leicester U21 captain.

End-to-end action ensued until half-time with neither side able to break each other down, but it would be Fylde who once again found themselves in front not long after the interval. The away side got a speculative shot in that Conway was only able to turn into the path of Lackey, who netted her second of the game.

Town once again would not be behind for long as a liquid team move was finished off superbly by Britt Sanderson after a perfect assist from Yasmin Mason.

Moments later, Town went in front for the first time in the game and it was an early goal of the season contender as Britt Sanderson picked the ball up on the half way line and drove forward before unleashing a ferocious shot over the fingertips of Craven in the Fylde goal, with the spectators all on their feet in appreciation.

The Coasters would throw everything at the Terriers in the closing stages but it was game, set and match in added time as debutant Feiruz Abdullahi got herself on the scoresheet with a fantastic solo goal. A floated ball forward was controlled by the ex-Salford City forward and she carried the ball forward before stepping inside her defender, powerfully finishing high to the right-hand side of the goal to seal all three points for Glen Preston’s side.

Huddersfield Town Women are back in FAWNL League Cup Determining Round action Sunday 27th August, where they welcome Middlesborough FC Women to the Stafflex Arena for a 2pm kick-off.
