Huddersfield Town Academy Manager Jon Worthington will take caretaker charge of the First Team for our Sky Bet Championship home fixture with Sheffield Wednesday.
No stranger to Town supporters, Dewsbury-born Worthington first became a Terrier aged nine, and is himself a product of the Club’s Academy. Rising through the ranks, Jon went on to make over 200 senior appearances between 2002-2009, becoming a fan favourite and Club captain along the way, with his finest hour in blue and white promotion at the end of the 2003/04 campaign.
Returning to the Millers Oils High Performance Complex after hanging up his boots in 2015, Worthington was initially our U17 coach after being appointed June 2019, before going on to take charge of the U19 group a year later. Two promising seasons in that role led to him becoming B Team Manager in 2021, with the former midfielder growing to oversee the entire Academy in 2022 as Academy Manager.
Recently vacating his B Team coaching duties to concentrate on the wider Academy in January 2024 with Kevin Russell subsequently added to the technical staff, both men will now work together overseeing our First Team. During his time with the Huddersfield Town Academy, Worthington has helped oversee the First Team debuts of a number of players, many of whom remain within our current squad.
Assisted by not only Russell, but fellow B Team Coach Michael Tonge, too, the group will be ably supported by our existing First Team performance, medical and analysis staff as we prepare for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday 3 February 2024.
