1973/74 FA YOUTH CUP TEAM REUNITE vs PLYMOUTH ON SATURDAY!

10 January 2024

Huddersfield Town’s finalists from the 1973/74 FA Youth Cup to reunite

- Huddersfield Town vs Plymouth Argyle
- 1973/74 FA Youth Cup team to attend fixture
- 50 years since team reached FA Youth Cup Final

We are delighted to be welcoming back coaches and players from our most successful ever FA Youth Cup team on Saturday afternoon’s fixture against Plymouth Argyle!

50 years on from their run to the final of the FA Youth Cup against Tottenham Hotspur, they were edged on aggregate over two legs by the North London side, with no Town youth team since able to go as far in the competition.

Joined by Richard Taylor, Alan Sweeney, Paul, Garner, Martin Fowler, Peter Hart, Lloyd Maitland, Bob Newton, Bob Mountain, Dave Nichols, Steve Spriggs, Paul Holmes, Kenny Ward and coach Robin Wray who were all part of that final squad, Grahame McGifford, Wayne Goldthorpe, Brian Young, John Dungworth and Graham Aslett will also be present, who were in and around the squad during the same era.

Seated together for the fixture, those joining us will be on the pitch at the John Smith’s Stadium at half-time to be acknowledged by our home support as part of their 50 year celebrations.

Up until that season, Town’s progress in the cup was stop-start, with the 1973/74 campaign the first time the Club made it past Round Four. Coached by former teacher Robin Wray, they were the first team from Yorkshire to make it to the final of the competition.

Facing what was described as a ‘star-studded’ Tottenham side, the tie ended 2-1 in Spurs’ favourite after two legs, with the winning goal coming in extra-time at Leeds Road in front of a crowd of 15,300 Terriers, which was the highest gate all season at any level for the Club, and almost three times the average attendance for the first team’s third division attendances that season.

A fantastic achievement from all involved, we would like to thank our HTSA Heritage Project and Lee Morris for their assistance in helping bring the squad back together.
