ANOTHER U23 AFCON APPEARANCE FOR DIARRA

29 June 2023

Brahima plays 45 minutes against reigning champions Egypt.

- Brahima Diarra earns a third cap for Mali Under-23s
- 19-year-old plays the second half as a substitute
- 10-man Mali defeated by reigning champions Egypt

Town midfielder Brahima Diarra made his second appearance in the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament for Mali on Wednesday evening!

The French-born teenager came on as a half-time substitute with his nation a goal down to reigning champions Egypt in their second group stage game and played the full 45 minutes in Morocco.

Unfortunately, their task got harder when another Mali player was sent off 10 minutes into the second period, with the game finishing 1-0 to the Egyptians.

That leaves Mali’s qualification to the knockout stages in the balance. They now sit third in the four team Group B with one win and one defeat, one point behind Egypt and Niger, who both have four points, with Gabon at the foot of the division and already eliminated.

Their crucial final game takes place at 9pm on Saturday evening, when a win over Niger would see them through as one of the top two placed positions.
