Huddersfield Town’s Football Manager Cup journey continued as Karlan Grant’s side beat Bristol City 2-1 to progress into the Quarter-Finals.

Karlan decided to stick with the side that beat Walsall 1-0 in the Second Round of the competition.

The Terriers, however, got off to a difficult start. After just two minutes, Bristol City hit the crossbar. Tomas Kalas rose highest to meet Kasey Palmer’s dangerous free-kick but smashed his header against the woodwork.

A huge chance then fell to Nahki Wells. The former Town striker wriggled into the area and had two fierce efforts denied by Jonas Lössl.

Despite the early pressure, Karlan’s side kept their cool and found an opener! Danny Simpson’s deep cross was kept alive by Emile Smith Rowe, before Chris Willock fired in from a tight angle.

Former Terrier, Kasey Palmer was pulling the strings for the Robins as they looked for a way back into the game and just before half-time it was that man that punished Town.

He received the ball 25-yards out, took a touch, and rifled an effort into the top corner. Admittedly Town’s ‘keeper had no chance.

At the break, after analysing the first half, Karlan made the call to bring on Steve Mounié to partner him upfront.

In the second period, the Robins continued to create chances. Jonas Lössl made save after save, whilst at the other end the partnership of Grant and Mounié upfront began to develop.

In previous rounds Karlan’s side has loved a last-minute goal and in the hope for another, Town’s Manager made a big change. He brought off goal scorer Chris Willock for Elias Kachunga.

With five minutes to go, Kache was released in the area and pulled the ball back to Mounié five yards out. The Benin international made no mistake to give Town the lead!

After a tense final few moments, Karlan’s side held on and progressed into the Quarter-Final of the Football Manager Cup.

The draw for the last eight of the competition is on Sunday 10 May 2020.
