Town’s Academy Manager on progression of Young Terriers

- Leigh Bromby reviews Under-17s game against Hartlepool United
- Academy Manager on the development of Town’s youngsters
- Under-19s face Brentford B on Tuesday 22 January 2019

Academy Manager Leigh Bromby spoke of the significant improvement that he has seen in Huddersfield Town’s Under-17s since the beginning of the season.

Town’s youngsters suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Hartlepool United at the weekend, but Bromby said he was pleased with the defensive display his side put in.

“We had worked a lot on fundamentals like defending the box and one vs one defending during the week which was good to see in the game; they did that part well.

“In the first-half we dominated and did really well. Some of the passages of play were nice to watch, they were showing that they know how to defend properly and put that type of performance together. That was pleasing to see.

“From the beginning of the season to where they are now there’s a massive difference but that’s because they’re practicing in training and getting that experience through games as well.”

One stand-out member of the Under-17s group this season has been midfielder Josh Austerfield, who despite being a member of the Under-17 squad, has been featuring for the Under-19s in recent weeks.

Bromby confirmed that Austerfield was also called up last week to train with the First Team.

“Josh trained with the First Team on Friday after a really good performance against Blackburn’s Under-20s, so that’s great to see. He’s a first year Under-17 and doing really well and he’ll play again against Brentford.

“That’s what it’s about. It’s about the progression of good players and making sure that there’s always a challenge for all the players.”

Town Under-19s travel to Jersey Road on Tuesday 22 January to take on Brentford in a 1pm kick-off.
