Huddersfield Town Academy Coach Michael Tonge spoke to us after this afternoon’s defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL Youth Alliance League.

Discussing today’s 1-3 defeat at full time, the Academy Coach said:

“A combination of things led to us losing the game this afternoon I think - we looked a little bit tired and we lost our structure in the game.

“We were really good in the first half, our reactions were really good if we gave the ball away and that’s where our first goal came from.

“I think Grimsby had a bit of a kick at half time from their manager but we knew this was how they were going to play in the second half – individual errors for the goals, which we could have done better on.

“We should have defended the first goal from the cross, we gave the ball away in a dangerous area for their second goal and it was far too easy for their lad to run into the box for their third goal.

“So, it was disappointing but if you take that out of consideration we were really strong for the first 60 minutes.”

Tonge then spoke about his temporary step-up with the U19s as he leads them for the remainder of the season alongside Oran Thompson while George Danaher assists with the B Team.

“We’ve just continued what George has been doing.

“For the last six months, we’ve just tried to show them how we play, show them our principles and how we want them to play when it comes to the games.

We’re trying to get a team together who can put what we have been practising in training into a game.

“It’s different when you’re having a stronger input in the decisions and how the team are playing.

“ I’ve been in and around it for a couple of years now and it’s been good, I’ve enjoyed it – it’s been good to work with Oran.

“I think, individually, there has been some difficult times because there is some uncertainty with the older lads with who is staying, which is something you had to deal with aside from the coaching - but overall, I have really enjoyed this.”
