Head Coach Carlos Corberán is ready for one of the “hardest” games his Huddersfield Town side have had so far this season when they face Barnsley on Boxing Day.

The Terriers make the short trip down to Oakwell for a Yorkshire derby on Saturday against a side who have won eight of their last 13 outings.

Carlos has been impressed with Valérien Ismaël’s Tykes in recent weeks and is bracing his side for a tough contest in South Yorkshire on Saturday.

“Barnsley is a team that have some players that are young and others with more experience. It’s a group with a lot of ambition and are hard-working,” he said.

“Both games against them when I was with Leeds were very tough. They showed a high level of determination in staying up last season and this year they are doing the same.

“They have covered some gaps with good players since, they also have a lot of energy and they are very aggressive in the pressing.

“It will be one of the hardest tests we’ve had so far this year.”

Like Town, Barnsley also possess a high-intensity nature to their play, making for a contest that Carlos is looking forward to between two teams with similar demands in their respective games.

Ahead of the encounter, the Spaniard praised the determination his side have showed to continue developing within that identity in recent months.

“Always, it’s (the style) a challenge. At the same time, we need to challenge ourselves every day.

“If one coach has to challenge the team, it means that the players don’t demand enough from themselves.

“Fortunately, I don’t have these types of players. This is one of the things that makes me proud when they are on the pitch.

“It’s always very important to have players that demand more from themselves than anyone in the world. If you don’t have this feeling, you can’t grow.”

As well as being a Yorkshire derby, Saturday's game is also one of 11 Sky Bet Championship fixtures to be played on Boxing Day this year.

The close relationship between the festive season and football in England is something special, says Carlos.

“It’s one of the things that make England a little bit different.

“When you link football with tradition, it shows how important football is for this country.

“This is for me why it’s one of the best in the world if not the best.”
