- Young Terriers perform well defensively

Huddersfield Town’s Under-19s made it two wins from two in the Central League with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers at PPG Canalside.

Goals from Kit Elliott, Josh Austerfield and substitute Scott High ensured the Young Terriers claimed maximum points.

Dean Whitehead’s side were dominant throughout and restricted Tranmere to very little in the way of a clear-cut chances. The result also represented a first clean sheet of the season for the age group.

Town set the pattern of the game early on, dominating the majority of possession but failed to create anything in the way of clear-cut chances.

The first real sight of goal came 25 minutes in. Darnell Mintus’ cross from the right was cleared straight into the path of Isaac Marriott - he unleashed a powerful half-volley that flew just over the Tranmere crossbar.

The Young Terriers were eventually rewarded for their patience eight minutes before the break. George Alfieri floated an inviting corner into the area which was met emphatically by the head of Elliott, leaving ‘keeper Luke Pilling with absolutely no chance.

Tranmere began to grow into the game shortly after the interval and went close when Bailey Thompson found Jordan Ponticelli with a neat first time lay-off, but his half-volley whistled just wide of the post.

That moment represented a wake-up call for the Young Terriers as they wrestled back control of the game and asserted their dominance once again.

Another Alfieri corner caused havoc for the visitors back-line when Romoney Crichlow-Noble’s header was somehow prevented from crossing the line by Pilling.

Town did not have to wait much longer for another chance and this time it was taken. Remi Thompson epitomised the high press that the youngsters displayed throughout the afternoon by winning the ball high up the field. He then fed the ball through to Austerfield who made no mistake in slotting home.

Once the second went in, the hosts began to play with freedom and created an abundance of chances. Kian Harratt’s lay-off located the run of High, who knocked it past his marker before seeing his effort well kept out by the ‘keeper.

High was not to be denied for much longer, however, when he picked up the ball in space at the edge of the area and curled an exquisite low drive in off the far post.

Town comfortably saw out the final 15 minutes and their next Central League encounter will take place at Blackpool on Tuesday 19 November 2019, where they will be looking to put in another good performance.
