Historic local tournament saved
PPG Canalside has stepped into the breach to save Huddersfield’s long-standing billiard and snooker finals and ensure they can continue.
The finals, which will be held at Town’s training ground during May, were traditionally held at Newsome Working Men’s Club, but that venue closed in January 2014 leaving its future uncertain.
With the tournament looking for a new finals venue, PPG Canalside – which has six full-size snooker tables for use by its members – has stepped in at the last minute to ensure the finals can take place.
The billiard and snooker finals will now start on Tuesday 6 May at 7.30pm, with a host of handicap and scratch finals for adults, juniors and teams taking place on evenings running until Friday 16 May.
The facility is also due to hold one of the semi-finals on Friday evening.
PPG Canalside’s Operations Manager Stuart Leach commented:
“We’re delighted we have been able to help these important community local snooker and billiard finals continue in light of the sad closure of the previous venue.
“As well as providing a top class training ground for the football club, a big ethos that drove the redevelopment of PPG Canalside was to provide top class community facilities and it’s great that we can again fulfil that purpose in this way.
“The tournament has a lot of history and is still very keenly contested – in fact a number of snooker players based at PPG Canalside are still faring well in the tournament! We’re looking forward to hosting the competition, starting with the semi-final on Friday.”
PPG Canalside’s snooker tables are available for members throughout the week and over the each weekend, including a match table which is available to team players for practise and match play.
PPG Canalside has its own teams that play on Monday afternoons and Thursday evenings and always welcomes new players.
Membership is priced at just £10 for a year.
