PLAYERS GET IN COMMONWEALTH GAMES SPIRIT!

24 July 2014

Find out about the Town squad’s hidden talents

The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow now upon us!

With football not on the Commonwealth games agenda – it’s never been a sport played in the games – htafc.com asked the Town squad which other sports they excel at compared to their teammates.

Martin Paterson, Northern Ireland

“Is tapping the ball in from a yard a Commonwealth Games sport? No? Ok – Boxing. But only if I fought ‘Clayts’,” he laughed.

Adam Clayton, England

(laughing) "Not too sure about that! I’d batter everyone at Table Tennis, and probably squash too."

Murray Wallace, Scotland

“Badminton – definitely.”

Joel Lynch, Wales

“I’d beat Murray at Badminton – I promise you. I’m really good; I was East Sussex schools’ champion!

“Basketball is a Commonwealth Games sport in 2018; 100% sure I’d win at that too. I don’t know many Welsh basketball players, so I’m probably going to be in there for real.

“And swimming; that’s my main event. I’m so elegant in the water, you’ve got no idea. In fact, put me down as winner for every single event!”

Sean Scannell, England or Jamaica

“I could outwrestle the entire squad. I’d beat everyone at weightlifting too. I can lift anything! Swimming would be my worst event though; I can’t swim to save my life.

“I think Nahki (Wells) would be good at Judo and ‘Hoggy’ would boss the Triathlon.”

Paul Dixon, Scotland

“Hockey – I’d be good at hockey.”

Nahki Wells, Bermuda

“I’m pretty fit, so I reckon diving and cycling would be my sports. I’d fancy my chances at basketball too!”

James Vaughan, England

“Rugby Sevens! I used to play rugby when I was younger and my Dad played professionally. I’d struggle to put a team together from this lot though – Lee Peltier might be alright but that’s it.”

Tommy Smith, England

“Sean (Scannell) could probably beat us all at wrestling. I think I’d win at Badminton though. I’m alright at Table Tennis too, but I know there are some sharks in the squad!”

Joe Lolley, England

“I was really good at tennis at school – I used to win competitions. I think they’ve stopped doing that at the Commonwealth Games though, so any other racket sport. I’d be decent at Squash.”

Oliver Norwood, Northern Ireland

“The nautical sports are for me. I lived on a canal growing up after all!”

Lee Peltier, England

“Table tennis! Vaughany said I’d be good at rugby? He’d be surprised!”

Danny Ward, England

“It’s a shame that Cricket hasn’t been played since 1998, as I used to play for West Yorkshire as a kid. I’d have a go at Squash and Table Tennis, but everyone will think they’re good at Table Tennis.”
