OLLIE PLAYS FOR NORTHERN IRELAND

16 October 2012

Norwood gets 90 during draw in Portugal

Town midfielder Oliver Norwood played 90 minutes on his ninth cap for Northern Ireland as they went close to pulling off a shock win at Portugal in the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers.

A goal from Helder Postiga ten minutes from time meant that Michael O’Neill’s side had to settle for an excellent away draw at the side ranked third in the world by FIFA after Niall McGinn had given them a half-time lead.

The Burnley-born 21 year-old midfielder was part of a five man midfield and played excellently on the evening at Porto’s Dragao Stadium, utilising the license afforded to him to get forward.

Northern Ireland now have two points from their opening three qualifying games; they drew 1-1 at home to Luxembourg and suffered a 2-0 defeat at group leaders Russia

A home clash with Azerbaijan on 14 November is now next up for Ollie and Northern Ireland.

Oliver will now return to Huddersfield ahead of Saturday’s npower Championship clash with Wolves
