Town’s Under-19s defeat a Halifax Town side at PPG Canalside

- 4-1 win for Town’s Under-19s at PPG Canalside
- Akinola, Ijiwole, McCamley and Thompson on the scoresheet for Town
- Academy Manager Leigh Bromby delighted with Young Terriers’ showing

Huddersfield Town Under-19s produced a tactically adept performance to convincingly beat Halifax Town 4-1 at PPG Canalside on Friday afternoon.

The Young Terriers were trailing at half-time but fought back after the break with goals from Tim Akinola, Andrew Ijiwole, Will McCamley and Remi Thompson.

Dean Whitehead’s side had the majority share of possession in the first half, but it was the visitors who held the advantage at the halfway stage, striking against the run of play in the first 45.

Town started to dominate proceedings following the restart and started to threaten in the final third of the pitch. The Young Terriers were rewarded for their superiority five minutes after the interval, when Akinola struck to draw the sides level.

Ijiwole then gave Town the lead moments after entering the field of play. The second half substitute had his initial effort saved by the feet of the outstretched Halifax goalkeeper, before making no mistake with the follow up to convert from close range.

McCamley then gave Town breathing space over the visitors as he rifled in Ilounga Pata’s driven cross, before Thompson got in on the act, keeping his composure two minutes from time to round off an excellent team performance.

Town’s Academy Manager Leigh Bromby was pleased with the performance of the U19s side, praising their work both on and off the ball.

“The objective of the game was mainly to give the players game time, but also for them to practice playing within the fight zones,” explained Leigh.

“A lot went well today tactically, especially without the ball. The focus in training at the moment is playing without the ball, and the main emphasis today was the mid-fight zone and to improve the players’ understanding of that, which I believe we did.

“It was pleasing to see us dominate possession in the first half and obviously it was nice to score the goals in the second.”
