Northern Irish youngster speaks ahead of Saturday’s game against Lincoln City

Huddersfield Town Under-17s midfielder Brodie Spencer believes there has been some significant improvements to his game following his arrival as a Young Terrier!

The Northern Irishman signed for Town as part of the Club’s summer 2020 intake and initially linked up with Jon Worthington’s Under-17s side.

Spencer has impressed since making the move to Canalside and despite being just 16 years old, he has also featured heavily for Town’s Under-19 side.

This included an excellent performance in Wednesday’s win over Salford City where he was up against Brandon Thomas-Asante, a player who has made 10 appearances for the Ammies in Sky Bet League Two this season.

Spencer spoke to htafc.com about how he has settled into life with the Terriers after his move from Cliftonville.

“Since I came to Huddersfield, I think I have really improved on my technical ability because I am playing with and against better players.

“If my touch isn’t right or if it’s a sloppy pass, you will get the ball taken off you straight away. Every pass and touch have to be perfect and I think I am adapting to that well.

“The coaches have helped me a lot because they help me pinpoint my weaknesses. That helps me realise what I need to focus on and improve on.

“At Cliftonville the standard is decent, but when you come here it is a completely different level. Everyone is faster, stronger and technically good on the ball so when I am coming up against players here it is a lot harder.”

The youngster went on to discuss how the Academy’s various training phases have helped to develop him as a player during his time in West Yorkshire so far.

“At the start it was all about the reaction when you lose the ball and I think I have improved a lot on that.

“When I first came in, if I gave the ball away, I would have probably moaned about it, but now I’m always straight back in and trying to win the ball back.

“We are currently working on the finishing phase, so our decision making in the final third. That’s the area where I really need to improve.”

The midfielder has also been capped at youth level for Northern Ireland’s Under-16s side. He revealed his pride at being able to represent his country, whilst also pinpointing his National Team’s setup as the reason he is where he is today.

“That experience was unreal. As a kid, everyone wants to play for their country so getting the call up to Northern Ireland was one of the best feelings ever. Stepping onto the pitch and playing for them was unbelievable.

“Without the whole Northern Ireland setup, I don’t think I would’ve been where I am today. Honestly, they just teach you all the fundamentals about moving away, how you need to be in and around the training ground and what you need to do once you go over. It really helped me.”

The Under-17s are back in action on Saturday 21 November when they travel to take on Lincoln City; kick-off 11am.
