Our final pre-season friendly ahead of the start of the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship season sees Dutch side travel to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday 29 July for the 3pm kick-off.

Final preparations for the start of the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship season, when we travel to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday 5 August 2023, will take place at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday 29 July when we welcome SC Heerenveen for a friendly in 3pm kick-off.

THE OPPOSITION

In the far north of the Netherlands, SC Heerenveen is a football club in the Eredivisie – the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands, which is ranked the sixth-best league in Europe by the UEFA.

They are currently working under the watchful eye of Head Coach Kees van Wonderen, who played over 200 games for fellow Eredivisie Club Feyenoord.

The Dutch side finished eighth in the Eredivisie last season out of 18 and have previously finished as runners-up three times, most recently in 2000.

In 2009, Heerenveen won the Dutch equivalent to the FA Cup, known as the KNVB Cup.

19-year-old Charlie Webster from Chelsea is the only player to join Heerenveen this transfer window so far, on a season long loan. The central midfielder has appeared for the England Under-19 team and has played for the Premier League side in EFL Trophy games.

Neil Warnock’s Terriers maintained their unbeaten pre-season record with a 1-0 win over Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen at the John Smith’s Stadium!

Second-half substitute Kyle Hudlin scored the game’s only goal in the 74th minute, finishing at the back post after superb work in the build-up from Tom Edwards, Hudlin, Kian Harratt and Ben Jackson.

That was the highlight of an otherwise cagey affair against the possession-heavy team from the Netherlands, who only managed to force Lee Nicholls into a couple of routine saves at the other end.

The game was fairly balanced in the opening 45 minutes but turned on a big incident right at the death, when visiting centre half Syb Van Ottele was shown a straight red card for denying Danny Ward a clear goalscoring opportunity.

After that, Town created the game’s big chances. Goalkeeper Andries Noppert did brilliantly to deny Harratt with a fingertip save that pushed his low shot onto the far post, whilst Jack Rudoni spurned a good shooting opportunity by unselfishly trying to square the ball to Ward.

Hudlin should have done better late on when Josh Koroma's looping cross gave him the opportunity to head home, but he planted his effort wide.
