Young Terriers fall to defeat in latest Central League Cup game

- Town’s Under-19s beaten by Doncaster Rovers
- Young Town side featured in the Central League Cup match
- Scott High and Remi Thompson scored for the Young Terriers

A youthful Huddersfield Town Under-19 side were defeated 6-2 by Doncaster Rovers at the Cantley Park Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon.

Dean Whitehead’s side fell two goals behind inside the opening three minutes and showed signs of a comeback when Scott High halved the deficit, but Rovers ultimately proved too strong for the Young Terriers.

It was the home side who began in the ascendency and took the lead inside the opening two minutes of the match. Town lost possession on halfway and the hosts swiftly broke forward, feeding Rakish Bingham through on goal. The striker’s left-footed effort found the bottom to corner to give Doncaster an early advantage.

Rovers doubled their lead seconds later through forward Max Watters. Alex Kiwomya received the ball on the left wing and clipped a deep lofted cross towards Watters at the back post, who controlled well and finished past Town goalkeeper Giosue Bellagambi via a deflection.

Doncaster spurned a glorious opportunity to put themselves three ahead when a free-kick from captain Shane Blaney rattled the post and rebounded straight to Kiwomya who, with the goal gaping, shot wide of the mark.

However, Town showed signs of improvement and enjoyed a period of possession midway through the first half. An intricate passage of play in midfield saw Town manipulate the ball to full-back Ilounga Pata, who delivered an excellent low cross towards the run of Kit Elliott at the near post, but he was unable to apply the finishing touch.

The Young Terriers reduced the deficit before half-time when Scott High converted from just inside the area. Brahima Diarra switched the play to Will McCamley, whose attempt was blocked and fell into the path of High to side foot into the bottom corner.

Whitehead’s side almost equalised instantly after the restart, courtesy of a slick through ball by second half substitute Remi Thompson, but Micah Obiero was unable to guide his shot on target.

However, the hosts began to dominate proceedings and ultimately proved too strong for the youthful Town side. Rovers scored four goals in quick succession to put the match out of Town’s reach, with the pick of the bunch being a curling free-kick from Blaney that nestled into the bottom right corner.

Thompson netted a late consolation three minutes from time after he first battled well to reclaim possession and then showed composure to finish precisely past the on-rushing goalkeeper.
