Town forward Rhys Healey attended the Premier League Primary Stars Under-11 National Girls Football Tournament regional stage, which was hosted by the Huddersfield Town Foundation.

On Monday 26 February, 13 Club Charitable Organisations from around Yorkshire and Lincolnshire competed against one another to progress into the next stage of the competition.

A total of 10 regional tournaments will be staged at community facilities across the country, with hundreds of young people representing Premier League, EFL and National League clubs hoping to win the opportunity to play on a Premier League pitch, in the playing kit of their respective professional football club.

Last year, more than 14,500 girls took part in the regional events. Goldstone Primary School, representing Brighton and Hove Albion, are the current champions having won the tournament in 2023 at Elland Road.

Leeds United Foundation came out as victors on the day, beating Sheffield United Community Trust, who will also progress into the next stage, on penalties after playing out a great 1-1 draw.

Barnsley FC Community Trust were awarded the ‘Fair Play’ award for their respect towards other teams, players, and the referee.

Proudly representing Town were Moldgreen Community Primary School, who won three of their six matches on the day.

Town forward Healey enjoyed spending time at the tournament and celebrating the girls’ participation in the tournament. He posed for photographs and signed many autographs, as well as speaking with the young people.PLPS-GirlsCup-Signing-16x9.jpg

Huddersfield Town striker Rhys Healey commented:

“It’s great for the girls because you can see with the rise in participation with women and girls’ football, it’s massive now, and you can see that with how many people are participating today and that’s really pleasing to see. It gets them active and engaging in communities and mixing with people from other areas.

“The generation is changing, and everyone should be accepted into any sport and things like today are amazing to see so many girls wanting to be a footballer and be like the stars they’re watching on TV.”

Premier League Charitable Fund Chief Executive, Ruth Shaw OBE, said:

“The Premier League Primary Stars Under-11 National Girls Football Tournament creates an amazing opportunity for girls from across England and Wales to come together and represent their professional football clubs, as part of the Premier League’s commitment to supporting the game.

“Last season, more than 14,500 girls took part in Premier League Primary Stars. These regional tournaments help to inspire even more girls across the country to enjoy the many benefits of football and bring young people from diverse backgrounds together.”
