TRIO OF TERRIERS ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY

4 September 2023

Three Town players playing for their countries this fortnight.

- Brodie Spencer earns recall to Northern Ireland squad
- Pat Jones and Charles Ondo also with their countries

Three Huddersfield Town players have joined up with their respective national teams for the first international break of the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship season.

As Town’s First Team has a first weekend break of the new campaign, with our next game being the visit of Rotherham United to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday 16 September, the trio have departed to hopefully earn further caps for their nation.

The headline is that 19-year-old Brodie Spencer (pictured above), who is currently on loan at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, has earned a recall to the senior Northern Ireland team.

Brodie, who hails from near Belfast, already has three caps for his country, which came in a trio of UEFA Nations League matches in the summer of 2022. Somewhat of a shock call-up at the time, Brodie impressed, providing an assist on his debut against Kosovo.

Spencer spent pre-season as part of the First Team squad under Neil Warnock and started our Carabao Cup game against Middlesbrough, but has subsequently departed to further his senior experience in the top flight of Scottish football, starting both games for his new club since.

Michael O’Neill’s squad face two UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers during the next fortnight. First up is a game against Slovenia in their capital, Ljubljana, on Thursday 7 September, which is followed by a trip to Kazakhstan on Sunday 10 September.

Winger Pat Jones has also headed away, joining up with the Wales Under-21 squad. Jones, 20, already has three caps at that level, is part of namesake Matty Jones’ squad for a friendly against Liechtenstein on Friday 8 September and a 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Lithuania four days later.

Our final summons of the break is for B Team player Charles Ondo. The versatile 19-year-old is joining up with the senior Equatorial Guinea squad for the third time for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on Wednesday 6 September, where he will be hoping to make his debut for his nation.
