CLUB AND TOWN FOUNDATION HOSTING ISLAMOPHOBIA AWARENESS EXHIBITION

18 October 2023

Huddersfield Town and Town Foundation hosting Islamophobia Awareness Month exhibition

- Huddersfield Town hosting Islamophobia Awareness exhibition
- November is Islamophobia Awareness Month 2023
- Event at John Smith’s Stadium on Wednesday 1 November 2023

An exhibition with activities to raise understanding and knowledge of Islamophobia Awareness Month will take place on the evening of Wednesday 1 November in the Big Red Stand at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Islamophobia Awareness Month aims to raise awareness of Islamophobia in the United Kingdom and showcase the positive contributions of Muslims in society.

The theme for IAM 2023 is #MuslimStories. The goal of this year’s campaign is to facilitate connections among individuals from diverse backgrounds, including both Muslims and non-Muslims, using the transformative power of storytelling.

Representatives of Huddersfield Town, the Huddersfield Town Foundation, and Kirklees Council will be amongst the guest speakers to publicly raise awareness of Islamophobia and highlight the contributions to British Society from our community. Other guest speakers will be attending from a host of agencies across Kirklees.

Chief Executive Officer of the Huddersfield Town Foundation Siobhan Atkinson, who will be speaking at the event, commented:

“We are delighted to be able to host this event at the John Smith's Stadium. These types of events allow us to show how we are working with the very varied communities across Kirklees.

“A group of young people, who have engaged in our Premier League Kicks programme, will be showcasing their journey and relationship with the Football Club and the Foundation and it's so important we provide young people with a platform, as I'm sure those in attendance will find it particularly interesting to hear their perspective.

“We look forward to welcoming anyone who is interested in seeing the exhibition that we have been able to access so that we can support Islamophobia Awareness Month and work towards all members of our community having a greater understanding and awareness of the issues."

The Foundation participants come from the Premier League Kicks social action youth group based at the Eden Centre Highfields, a Masjid in Central Huddersfield. Members of the group will be sharing their experiences of how they have positively impacted on their local community over the past eighteen months.

This event supports Huddersfield Town Football Club and the Huddersfield Town Foundation’s ongoing commitment to the Premier League Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Standard and associated frameworks.

The Club recently became the first EFL side to be awarded the PLEDIS Advanced Award after years of hard work and commitment to ensuring that Huddersfield Town is open, inclusive, and welcoming of all.

Huddersfield Town’s Human Resources Manager and Equality Lead, Zoe Shackleton, said:

“As a Club, we strive to be inclusive of everyone regardless of any characteristic, and we are committed to welcoming, reflecting, and representing those in Huddersfield, Kirklees and throughout our community.

“Our Terriers Together Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy sets out our longer-term goals and aspirations, which include maintaining the PLEDIS Advanced Award and working towards the Gold Standard of the EFL Equality Code of Practice.

“Events such as the Islamophobia Awareness Exhibition are practical and tangible examples of how we aim to make our strategy come to life and make a real difference to the people of Kirklees.

“We’re proud to be working with the Huddersfield Town Foundation to host this event, and we look forward to welcoming you all to the John Smith’s Stadium!”
