MICHAŁ HELIK NAMED HARGREAVES MEMORIAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR!

9 May 2023

Central defender named 2022/23 Huddersfield Town Hargreaves Memorial Player of the Year

- Michał Helik named Hargreaves Memorial Player of the Year
- Helik signed on deadline day in summer from Barnsley
- Jack Rudoni and Matty Pearson runners-up in supporter led vote

Cementing himself as a reliable figure at the heart of our defence since his summer arrival, supporters have voted Polish international central defender Michał Helik as the 2022/23 Hargreaves Memorial Player of the Season!

The first defender to be named Player of the Year since former captain Christopher Schindler’s back-to-back wins in 2018 and 2019, Helik takes over the reigns from goalkeeper Lee Nicholls who also won the award in his debut season as a Terrier.

With supporter votes collated by the Huddersfield Examiner as always, Michał received 33% of the vote with over 3,000 supporters submitting a ballot. Jack Rudoni finished as runner-up with 28% of the vote with Blue & White Members Club Player of the Year Matty Pearson finishing third with 18%.

Michał was awarded the Hargreaves Memorial Trophy before our final home fixture of the 2022/23 season by Sarah and Kelly from the Hargreaves family and Steven Chicken of the Huddersfield Examiner.

Having arrived from our neighbours in Barnsley on deadline day of the 2022 summer transfer window, Helik has played 37 times for the Terriers in his debut campaign, playing almost every minute possible other than when missing for just three fixtures with an injury in February. Registering two goals, two assists and only two bookings in the Sky Bet Championship, the central defender has been incredibly reliable since arriving in West Yorkshire.

Establishing a great understanding with Tom Lees across the 2022/23 season and latterly Matty Pearson since his return from injury, whether playing in a back two or three, Helik has remained effective and committed, with his no-nonsense brand of defending winning over the Town support as well as his underrated ability on the ball going forward.

Still just 27 years old, it was a debut season in blue and white to remember for Michał, with the platform now established for even bigger and better things in the future.

Congratulations on the award, Michał!
