Town secured safety in the Sky Bet Championship in a crucial home win over already promoted Sheffield United on Thursday evening, with the only goal of the game coming from Danny Ward in the second half.
Stretching our run to just one defeat in nine games, the Terriers needed to win or draw against Sheffield United to secure Sky Bet Championship safety. A second half goal from Danny Ward secured all three points for Town and lifted the spirits of the John Smith’s Stadium ahead of our game against Reading on Monday 8 May.
Despite the Blades being the stronger side in the first half as they held onto possession and were quick on the break, Town battled and created chances of their own in order to keep the score level as we headed into the break with everything to play for.
From a throw in, Ward was able to spin around the man marking him and carry the ball towards the Sheffield United area. From there, he shot with his left foot, from outside the box, and sent a curling shot into the opposite corner of the goal to put the Terriers a goal ahead.
As we secured Sky Bet Championship safety, our number 25 scored his fifth goal, whilst Lee Nicholls kept a clean sheet in his welcome back to the John Smith’s Stadium after his lengthy injury.
