Huddersfield Town Academy Coach Oran Thompson spoke to us after this afternoon’s defeat to Bradford City in the EFL Youth Alliance League.

Discussing today’s 4-1 defeat at full time, the Academy Coach said:

“I thought we started well.

“We’ve just spoken to the lads and the goals we conceded were more down to the fundamentals rather than tactical – I didn’t think they created many chances through tactical play, it was more fundamentals.

“If we had been more switched on and harder round the box, then we probably would have been harder to beat, that’s probably what they did better than us today.

“I think as young lads they need to get used to playing multiple games a week.

“The Sky Bet Championship play two or three games a week at times, and I think that’s something we must get better at - learning how to cope with it.”

Thompson spoke about his temporary step-up with the U19s as he leads them for the rest of the season alongside Michael Tonge while George Danaher assists with the B Team.

“I have really enjoyed stepping up into this role for this part of the season, it’s a good challenge and something different working with younger players who are more at the start of their full-time football journey.

“It’s also nice to be able to help them more with everything off-field – the B Team lads are more clued up and have had their first few years, so now we have to support the younger lads to get used to this career.

“Shouting and encouraging from the side-lines is just natural, I always feel like I have to help and I want to help, so if I see something that can help the lads on the pitch then I make sure I can give that information to them from the side.”

Finally, Oran touched on taking things as they come and not wanting to look to much ahead, but instead wanting to focus on helping the young lads.

“I don’t like to think too much ahead, I just go game by game, season by season while enjoying coaching and helping young players develop because I’ve been in that position and it’s something I can help them with to achieve more.”
