‘PROUD ABOUT TOWN’ KIRKLEES PRIDE EVENT REVIEW

19 June 2023

Kirklees Pride event took place on Saturday 17 June 2023

- The event returned for its second year in St George’s Square on Saturday 17 June
- Club and Huddersfield Town Foundation representatives were present
- ‘Proud About Town’ LGBTQ+ group

Huddersfield Town introduced our LGBTQ+ ‘Proud About Town’ group this Pride month. Members of staff from Huddersfield Town Football Club and the Huddersfield Town Foundation participated in the Kirklees Pride event that was held in St George’s Square on Saturday 17 June, to promote the new ‘Proud About Town’ LGBTQ+ group.

The second Kirklees Pride event returned on an even bigger and better scale than the first. It was a fun-filled day with live music and a wide variety of stalls. People from across Kirklees turned out to support the event and celebrate with the LGBTQ+ Community and their allies.

Huddersfield Town AFC and the Huddersfield Town Foundation were delighted to have a stall at the event and to talk to people about the work we are jointly doing to advance LGBTQ+ inclusion within a football context. Our staff representatives were keen to speak to as many people as possible about our new ‘Proud About Town’ LGBTQ+ group and how this represents a new era in this aspect of our equality, diversity, and inclusion work.

Attendees were able to express their interest in working with us to develop ‘Proud About Town’, while also entering a ‘spot the ball’ competition to win tickets to a Town match, and to have their photograph taken using our specially designed selfie frame. Another highlight of the event was a guest appearance from Terry the Terrier, who posed for photos with his fans.

Our Human Resources Manager and Equality Lead, Zoe Shackleton, said:

“It was fantastic to be invited to participate in this year’s Kirklees Pride event and to speak to people about the work we are doing to ensure our environment is welcoming and inclusive of everyone.

“We received a huge amount of support for ‘Proud About Town’ and we’re excited to take this forward with everyone who registered their interest.”

Abbie Wilkinson is our Premier League Kicks Mentor at the Town Foundation, they added:

“Saturday was such a wonderful day and I’m incredibly proud and honoured to gave been given the opportunity to represent my Club and community.

“The work that we’re doing to support LGBTQ+ fans through ‘Proud About Town’ is amazing and I’m excited to see where it goes from here, especially after receiving such positive feedback from those we spoke to at Kirklees Pride.”

We will be holding a meeting very soon to make plans for developing ‘Proud About Town’ and will publish further details in due course.
