- Four new scholars join Huddersfield Town Academy
- Players will train and play with U19s
- Goalkeepers and three defenders added to ranks
We are delighted to welcome four new scholars to the Huddersfield Town Academy, with our U19 group welcoming Alex Walpole, Anthony Gregory, Oliver Calland and Jay Smith to their side!
With players both graduating to B Team level and released during the summer, four new scholars have signed for Town as the U19s welcome a new goalkeeper, a central defender and two full-backs.
Signed from Billingham Town in grassroots football, goalkeeper Alex Walpole is just 17-years-old and has played against the Town Academy in the past for Hartlepool United.
He is joined by central defender Anthony Gregory, who signs from Premier League side Arsenal having recently exited the London side aged 16 having been there since 10 years old. Right footed, he defends well and is comfortable on the ball, allowing him to play in either side of defence, at right-back or as a holding midfielder.
Having signed for Manchester City at nine years old and only recently released, 16 year old Oliver Calland is capable of playing across the pitch despite being listed as a right-back, also showing comfort in central defence, holding midfield and higher up the pitch in an attacking role. With a long history of full-time training, his technical and tactical knowledge gives him a real advantage in game.
Having started as a striker in grassroots football, right-back Jay Smith dropped deeper during his time in the Everton academy. Now comfortable across the backline, Jay thrives in defensive situations and has made several trial appearances for the Town Academy already, moving into a full-time scholarship at the Millers Oils High Performance Complex this season.
Congratulations to all four of our latest Academy recruits, and welcome to Huddersfield Town!
