EFL RULE CHANGES AHEAD OF 2023/24 SEASON

31 July 2023

Full update on EFL rule changes ahead of 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship season

- Nine substitutes to be named in match day squad in 2023/24
- Change to the existing rules in the Sky Bet Championship
- Multiball also in use, but towels not permitted

Neil Warnock will be able to select from nine substitutes in the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship thanks to a change in the rules announced by the EFL.

Following a discussion by EFL Clubs regarding the number of substitutes named in match day squads, Sky Bet Championship clubs have opted to use five substitutes from nine named in the 2023/24 season.

That’s an increase from the seven that were named on the bench in the 2022/23 campaign.

The increase in the size of match day squads is one of a few rule changes for the new season.

The EFL will introduce a multiball system in all its competitions for the 2023/24 season. Match balls will be placed on cones in designated areas at pitch side to help increase the time of the ball being in play.

Meanwhile, clubs will no longer be permitted to use towels or other articles, including items obtained from spectators, to dry footballs during matches.

Finally, match officials will take a new approach to time keeping this coming season. In line with the most recent IFAB guidance, the EFL and PGMOL are committed to ensure a more accurate calculation of additional time alongside an improvement in the amount of time the ball is in-play from the start of the new season.
