SIGNING: MATT LOWTON JOINS ON LOAN!

4 January 2023

Experienced right back signs on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season from Burnley

- Matt Lowton signs on loan from Burnley
- Defender to remain with Huddersfield Town for 2022/23 season
- Comments from Leigh Bromby and Mark Fotheringham

We are delighted to announce the signing of right back Matthew Lowton from Burnley FC, who will remain with Town on loan until the conclusion of the 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship season!

With a long, successful career across both the Premier League and Sky Bet Championship, the defender will bring experience to the Club with over 400 appearances to his name so far.

Hailing from Chesterfield, the right back graduated from the nearby Sheffield United academy in 2007, going on to become a fixture of their first team until his departure to Premier League side Aston Villa in 2012 for a multi-million-pound fee.

Spending three years in the Midlands, all in the top flight, he then moved on to parent club Burnley for the 2015/16 season in the Sky Bet Championship – contributing to his new side returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Installing himself as a key part of a famously effective Burnley defence, Lowton played consistency for the next six seasons in the Premier League under Sean Dyche, but has found minutes harder to come by since Vincent Kompany took charge in the Sky Bet Championship.

Commenting on the signing, Head Coach Mark Fotheringham said:

“Matt is an excellent addition to the group, and I’m really looking forward to working with him. He has an incredible amount of experience at the highest level of the game in this country, so he brings a real depth and reliability to what remains a relatively young group.

“He has already shown his professionalism and ability in the short time he’s been training with us, and I know he’s going to fit in perfectly with our existing group.”

Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby added:

“We’re really pleased to have Matt join us, and it’s an important signing for us to have completed early in the window. To bring in that level of experience gives our group a real boost both on and off the field, giving us depth with Ollie Turton currently sidelined.

“To have played at the top level for the majority of your career says so much about not only your ability but your approach to training and being a professional, and those are all qualities we’re hoping to benefit from until the end of the season.”

Lowton will take squad number 38 for the remainder of the 2022/23 season. Welcome to the Terriers, Matt!
