5 January 2023

Swiss striker joins Town on short-term contract until the end of 2022/23 season

- Florian Kamberi signs for Huddersfield Town
- 27-year-old forward has been training with the Club since November 2022
- Comments from Leigh Bromby and Mark Fotheringham

We are delighted to announce the signing of striker Florian Kamberi, who joins on a short-term contract for the remainder of the 2022/23 season as a free agent!

Not a new name or face for Town fans, Kamberi has been training with our First Team since our warm-weather training camp in Marbella in November 2022, earning himself a contract after impressing within the group.

Born in Lachen, Switzerland, the now 27-year-old began his career at local side FC Rapperswil-Jona before moving to Grasshoppers in 2014 where he netted 15 times in 21 games for their U21 side. Stepping up to the senior side the next season, Kamberi scored three times in 10 starts, making another 18 appearances from the bench and earning himself a call-up to the Swiss U21s.

Moving to German 2. Bundesliga outfit Karlsruher SC in August 2016 on loan, Kamberi went on to score once in 12 starts and it was here that the forward first crossed paths with our Head Coach Mark Fotheringham, who was a coach at the club.

Again heading out on loan in January 2018, this is where his career in British football began, signing for Scottish Premiership side Hibernian and scoring nine times in 14 appearances. Handed a three-year deal in the Scottish capital following the successful loan, Kamberi then scored 13 times in 43 games before Glasgow giants Rangers took him on loan in January 2020.

Having registered 30 goals and 13 assists for Hibs in 84 appearances, he returned to Switzerland for a short period with St. Gallen – earning his first international call-up for Albania in the process – before returning to these shores with Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan. Scoring five times in 16 starts, playing 11 more times from the bench, Kamberi signed for Swiss Super League side in Winterthur in the summer of 2021 where he scored twice in five starts, making a further 11 appearances as a sub.

Head Coach Mark Fotheringham commented:

“Florian is a player I know well from our time in Germany together, where I coached him at Karlsruher SC. Following his career from that point, I also admired his time in the Scottish Premiership with both Hibernian and Rangers, so am of the belief that he is a good addition to our squad who can bring an additional attacking threat in the second half of our season. A hard worker with an eye for goal and good size at six foot two, he’s already shown what he can bring to the group since joining up with us in Marbella.”

Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby added:

“Having come in and worked extremely hard since day one after first meeting up with the squad in Marbella, Florian has shown a willingness to earn his place and fight for his chance which is going to be brilliant for the competition in our forward areas for the remainder of the season. With so much important football to play between now and the end of the current campaign, it’s important for us to have as strong of a squad as possible to help us push on.”
