Huddersfield Town return to Emirates FA Cup action on Saturday 7 January 2022; 12.30pm, travelling to Deepdale for the second time in as many away games to play Preston North End in the Third Round.
For the second time in 12 days, our Terriers travel to Deepdale – this time hoping to progress further in the Emirates FA Cup
We go into this game wanting to get back to winning ways after our home defeat to Luton Town on New Year’s Day following back-to-back wins against Preston on Boxing Day and Rotherham United on Thursday 29 December.
Preston North End come into this tie after a stoppage-time winner from Ched Evans against Stoke City on Monday 2 January.
THE OPPOSITION
This is the fourth time the Lilywhites will face our Terriers in the 2022/23 season following a Carabao Cup game at the beginning of the season as well as both Sky Bet Championship fixtures. Preston have won both games hosted at the John Smith’s Stadium but were defeated by Town at Deepdale on Boxing Day.
Ryan Lowe’s side will be looking to progress to the Fourth Round Proper this year as they were knocked out at the Third Round last season away at Cardiff City.
ONES TO WATCH
Greg Cunningham
The defender broke through for Preston and made over 100 appearances between 2015 to 2018 before he made a move to Cardiff City. Spending three seasons with the Bluebirds, he eventually returned to Deepdale on an initial loan spell, however the move was soon made permanent with a deal agreed until the summer of 2023. Cunningham has scored both of his goals this season against Town in the two Sky Bet Championship fixtures, so we'll do well to put an end to that run.
Ali McCann
The midfielder joined Preston on deadline day in August 2021 on a four-year deal after he had previously spent his career with Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone. In his first season at Deepdale, McCann made 28 appearances and scored in a fantastic away victory over AFC Bournemouth. The 23-year-old netted a brace against Town earlier this season in the Carabao Cup in August as the Terrriers exited the competition at the John Smith's Stadium.
Ched Evans
The forward initially signed for Preston on loan from Fleetwood Town, but he went on to sign a permanent contract until the summer of 2023 after making a good impression at Deepdale. This season, Ched Evans has scored six goals and assisted one other in 21 appearances, making him the Lilywhites top scorer at present. In a good run of form, Evans scored a dramatic winner last time out in added time for Preston as they overcame Stoke City.
FA CUP FORMAT
The tie between Town and Preston will go to a replay at the John Smith's Stadium should the score be level after 90 minutes.
