Joining us at the Millers Oils High Performance Complex on her 90th birthday, Maureen has been a dedicated Season Card Holder for 50 years and has travelled both home and away to support the Terriers.

Maureen’s love of football started at a young age after a treat to go watch a Huddersfield Town pre-season game and her passion for the sport only grew after that.

“The first time I watched a football match, I was 10; my father took me as a treat with my mum and my brother because I had passed my scholarship to go to Grammar School.

“Mum thought we would go to the theatre, but dad took us to a football match – a possibles vs probables game, because in those days that was the pre-season special for every club, it let everyone know who the players were.”

Not only has she been to every home game in the last 50 years, but she travels to watch the First Team and goes to every away game – she also comes to watch our B Team when they play at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“Since I retired, I have seen every game, other than the one when I was in hospital but even then, I got messages about the game – I have watched them a long time.

“You get to know people around you, so I have a football family, just like I have a church family and I have my own family. People talk to you and they’re all friendly, it’s lovely – even the players say hello.”

The local celebrity spoke about her favourite Town game and what the stadium means to her.

“I suppose my favourite game would be Wembley when we won - that was great.

“We went the day before and I got tickets in the gallery so I could get over the excitement of being at Wembley and concentrate on our game.

“This place (John Smith’s Stadium) does mean a lot, especially the way it was built for the whole community. “

Maureen had planned to spend her birthday travelling to watch Town, instead she got a surprise visit to the Millers Oils High Performance Complex.

“I had thought I was going to Coventry, but having heard the match has been moved, I’m not sure what I’ll do for my birthday!”

Everyone at Huddersfield Town would like to wish Maureen a Happy 90th Birthday!
