31 January 2023

On loan central defender Luke Mbete has been recalled by parent club Manchester City

- Comments from Leigh Bromby and Mark Fotheringham

We can confirm that defender Luke Mbete has rejoined Manchester City after his parent club exercised their option to recall.

Having played six times in the Sky Bet Championship for Town after joining in September 2022, the defender hasn’t featured in the First Team match day squad since 11 December 2022 in the home draw with Swansea City.

Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby commented:

“With Tom Lees, Michał Helik and Will Boyle all playing well, and with Matty Pearson now fully fit, Luke’s opportunities with us would’ve remained extremely limited between now and the end of the season.

“We cannot fault his effort or application, and we’ve enjoyed having him at the Club. Luke has the potential to be a brilliant defender, and has time on side at such a young age to fulfil that. We wish him all the best in the future.”

Head Coach Mark Fotheringham added:

“Luke is a lovely person and has made every effort in his time with us, but it’s unlikely he would’ve seen much First Team action going forward with Lees, Helik, Pearson and Boyle ahead of him, with the likes of Turton and Hogg also available to fill in at the back.

“I’m certain he’ll go on to have an excellent career, and it’s been a pleasure to have him as part of our group.”

The Club would like to thank Luke for his contribution and wish him all the best for the future.
