Despite playing out a largely even encounter at the DW Stadium, a late headed goal from defender Jack Whatmough saw Wigan Athletic secure all three points.

Town had made three changes to the starting side with Anthony Knockaert coming in for his first start at a Terrier, with both Etienne Camara and Josh Ruffels also returning to the team.

Starting the game brightly, Town were enjoying plenty of joy down the right wing with Joe Hungbo, who was using his pace, power and direct running to great effect, but the side were never able to fully capitalise on the openings that created.

Sadly, an early injury to Ollie Turton meant Town had to reshuffle at the back, with the right-back appearing to suffer an injury to his knee during a challenge. Coming off for Will Boyle, this meant that Matty Pearson would spend the rest of the afternoon at right-back.

A game with precious few clearcut chances, Town did have efforts on goal through Hungbo and Knockaert especially, but nothing that Amos in the Wigan net had too much trouble dealing with.

With a second half that followed much the same pattern as the first, a late set play for Wigan was eventually nodded home by Whatmough, with the home side dropping deep for the remaining minutes of the match to secure all three points.
