The first game of the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship campaign for the Terriers, Plymouth Argyle awaits Town at Home Park as we travel back to Devon on Saturday 5 August, with the fixture kicking off at 3pm.
Our first Sky Bet Championship game of the 2023/24 season is finally in sight as we prepare to make the trip down south to play newly promoted Plymouth Argyle for the first league meeting since 2011, with the game taking place on Saturday 5 August at 3pm.
THE OPPOSITION
Plymouth Argyle were promoted to the Sky Bet Championship at the end of the 2022/23 season as champions and joined England’s second division for the first time since they were relegated at the end of the 2009/10 season.
The Pilgrims finished last season on 101 points, having won 31 games, drawn eight and lost seven – finishing three points ahead of Sky Bet League One runners-up Ipswich Town.
In 2019, Steven Schumacher was brought to Home Park as Assistant Manager to Ryan Lowe and helped contribute to the immediate return to Sky Bet League One after Plymouth were relegated to Sky Bet League Two the season before.
Following the departure of Lowe in December 2021, Schumacher was quickly appointed manager of Plymouth Argyle and seen them achieve their second promotion in four years.
ONES TO WATCH
Joe Edwards
Edwards joined Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2019, after a year with Colchester followed by three years at Walsall, and has since been a part of two promotions, being named captain and was named Player of the Season for the 2020/21 campaign. Initially joining Argyle as part of their central midfield, Edwards has established himself as a wing-back over time. By the end of the 2022/23 season, Joe had made 186 appearances in all competitions for the Pilgrims and scored 17 goals.
Matt Butcher
After two seasons with Accrington Stanley, Matt Butcher arrived at Home Park in the summer ahead of the 2022/23 season and in his first season was part of the side that were promoted to the Sky Bet Championship as champions. Going through the ranks with AFC Bournemouth, Butcher has experienced loan spells with the likes of Gosport Town, Poole Town, Woking, and St Johnstone, as well as a season long loan with Yeovil Town before moving to Accrington Stanley. In his first season, the central midfielder made 48 appearances and scored three goals.
Ryan Hardie
Plymouth Argyle’s top goal scorer for their promotion season, Ryan Hardie signed a three-year-deal this summer to extend his career with the Pilgrims. The forward first joined Argyle on loan from Blackpool in January 2020 for the rest of the season and then joined again on loan the following the season before signing permanently in January 2021. Overall, Hardie has made 163 appearances for Plymouth, 108 of these starts, and has scored 49 times – 17 of these goals came last season as they achieved promotion.
