Town welcome Middlesbrough to the John Smith’s Stadium in the Carabao Cup
- Huddersfield Town vs Middlesbrough
- Carabao Cup First Round Tie
- Tickets available: £10 Adults, £5 Concessions
Both sides will be looking to get their 2023/24 seasons back on track after opening day defeats in the Sky Bet Championship as we temporarily turn our attention to the Carabao Cup.
While it was a loss away to Plymouth Argyle for the Terriers, visitors Middlesbrough lost at home to Millwall on the opening day despite being tipped to be one of the teams to watch this campaign.
Fortunes for Middlesbrough took a sharp upward turn upon the arrival of Michael Carrick as Head Coach, with the Teessiders going on an impressive run to the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals last season, eventually falling to Coventry City.
Despite that opening day defeat, Boro will have high hopes for the campaign ahead and Carrick will be looking to build on a record in charge that has seen him only lose 11 of his first 34 games in charge.
ONES TO WATCH
A summer arrival to Boro from Queens Park Rangers, goalkeeper Seny Dieng is in the prime of his career at 28 years old. A full Senegalese international, he played 121 times for QPR before making the move up north in the summer, building on a career that his also seen him turn out for Grasshoppers, Doncaster Rovers, Dundee and Stevenage. A dynamic presence between the sticks, Dieng has kept 56 clean sheets in 248 career games to date.
Moving back toward his birthplace of Gateshead in January 2023 when Boro came in for the then Rotherham United man, midfielder Dan Barlaser was a priority signing for Michael Carrick in his first transfer window. A create midfielder who’s energetic on both sides of the ball, Barlaser created one goal in the 11 games he played for Boro to close the 2022/23 campaign, adding to the two goals and seven assists he’d contributed in 28 outings for Rotherham earlier that same season.
A product of the Huddersfield Town Academy who also made the switch from Rotherham United to Middlesbrough – albeit several seasons sooner – Matt Crooks signed a new deal with Boro in the summer that will extend his stay at the Riverside to the end of the 2024/25 season. With 18 goals and nine assists to his name in 85 appearances for Middlesbrough, the tall attacking midfielder has given his side a unique and effective approach to going forward that is often difficult to defend.
