Despite a first goal at the John Smith’s Stadium each for Kian Harratt and Kyle Hudlin, the pair scored either side of three finishes for Middlesbrough who’ll progress in the Carabao Cup.
Flying out of the blocks, Harratt smashed Town ahead from close range after Middlesbrough were pressed high and couldn’t keep hold of the ball, with the Terriers looking much the better side at that stage of the game.
Shortly after, though, a through ball from Barlaser set Isaiah Jones clean through and Jaheim Headley’s shoulder-to-shoulder tackle resulted in a straight red card, with the referee seeing it as a denial of a goalscoring opportunity.
Boro made their extra man count with the equaliser shortly after, but Town rallied and finished the first half the better side, even having a penalty for handball waved away despite replays showing that contact had clearly been made.
The second half was a different story with Middlesbrough more composed and bossing possession, scoring twice without reply in what would ultimately be the game winning portion of the contest. Town continued to battled and try their luck on the break, but the extra man was making a difference.
Fighting until the last, substitute Kyle Hudlin headed home a Pat Jones cross with virtually the last act of the game to mark his own competitive debut for the Club with a goal, adding to an encouraging pre-season for the big man.
