Ben Wiles arrives at Huddersfield Town with almost a century of Sky Bet Championship appearances under his belt, on top of two promotions with former club Rotherham United.

Born in Rotherham on 17 April 1999, Ben had football in his blood; his grandfather was former Scotland and Sheffield United player Eddie Colquhoun.

He soon joined the Rotherham United Academy and progressed through the age groups before signing his first professional contract in June 2017.

Wiles’ first taste of senior football came two months later through a loan at local non-league side Frickley Athletic, but after just one month and five appearances he was back with the Millers to make his debut in two Papa John’s Trophy games in October and November 2017.

The next season – the 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship campaign – was a breakthrough one for Ben. He made his debut at that level as a substitute away at Brentford on the opening day and didn’t look back, making 12 starts and 11 substitute appearances under Paul Warne.

Ben’s progression continued in 2019/20. He made 35 starts and five substitute appearance, scoring five goals, as the Millers gained immediate promotion back to the Championship by finishing as runners-up in League One. Ben’s importance to that season was recognised at the end of the season when he was named the club’s Young Player of the Year, and he was also given a new long-term contract too.

Wiles made 37 starts and eight substitute appearances, scoring twice, back at Championship level in 2020/21, and soon gained a second League One promotion in 2021/22. As a teammate of Town loanee Rarmani Edmonds-Green, he also lifted the Papa John’s Trophy that season as a virtual ever-present, making an incredible 53 appearances and scoring a personal best of 10 goals from midfield.

Ben’s form garnered significant reported interest from Burnley in the summer of 2022, but he was still a Rotherham player for the 2022/23 Championship season. An ankle injury ended his season early, but he still made 24 starts and three substitute appearances, scoring twice, as the Millers finished above the relegation zone.

He’s made three appearances for Rotherham this season, taking his total to 193 appearances for the club before his move to West Yorkshire. That includes 93 in the Sky Bet Championship and 79 in League One.
