Having fallen behind to a goal from Joe Gelhardt on the break in the first half, Town showed their resilience after the break by coming out the better side, ultimately disappointed that one point wasn’t three.

Changing tact somewhat, Town went on the front foot and were more assertive without the ball, pressing high and pushing Sunderland whenever possible – which created an open and entertaining game with chances for both sides.

Arguably with the better of the opportunities, Town played forward with real purpose and freedom, creating openings for Danny Ward and Jaheim Headley where either strong defensive work or rushed shots stopped them from going in front.

With two of their Premier League signings combining to open the scoring as Amad Diallo fed Joe Gelhardt, it would have been easy for the Terriers to fold in front of a big home crowd – but the opposite played out. Throwing more caution to the wind, diving into tackles and blocks where necessary and really taking the game by the scruff of the neck, Town fought back with an unbelievable away support cheering them all the way.

Pressure eventually told as David Kasumu won the ball back and set Koroma off driving at the Sunderland goal. Shooting from the edge of the box, his effort took a kind deflection en route and nestled in the far side of the net, drawing Town level.

The game finished frantically with both sides looking for a winner, but a point apiece was a fair reflection of a game that could have gone either way.
