Huddersfield Town Women start their FA Cup campaign on Sunday 13 November against Doncaster Belles; 1pm kick-off.
Huddersfield Town Women will be aiming to continue their fine form in cup competitions when they travel to Doncaster Rovers Belles this Sunday 13th November for a 1pm kick-off in the Vitality FA Women’s Cup.
After a comfortable first round win the County Cup, the Women Terriers followed that up with a hard fought win against Stoke City Ladies. The Women Terriers followed this up with another trip to Loughborough this time in the league. A familiar opponent in Loughborough Lightning and a journey Huddersfield Town Women had made only a short time before. Having defeated the opponent in the cup, the Women Terriers looked to to do the double against Loughborough before heading into the Vitality FA Cup first round.
Doncaster Rover Belles are second in the WPL Division One Midlands. The Belles have two games in hand on their rivals for the top spot Stourbridge. Town Women and Doncaster Belles played against each other last season in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Cup quarter final stage.
The match was very fast paced, and little separated the sides at the start. Every defensive stop led to another fast paced counter attack. The Women Terriers high press was a big contributing factor. This prevented Doncaster from playing out the back and drew errors from the visitors.
Town Women came the closest to scoring on the half hour mark, when Britt Sanderson skimmed the crossbar after a cross from Mia Parry. The Belles responded immediately but were unable to find the back of the net.
The second half saw the Terrier Women come out swinging and earned two quick corners in the space of the first couple of minutes. It took until the 60th minute when Laura Elford was brought on, her first game back from injury. Elford made an impact straight away. Plenty of chances and an offside goal causing frustration.
However, in the 75th minute Elford got a shot off after taking the ball from the halfway line. The shot was parried by the Belles keeper, but only as far as the back of their own net. From there, the Women Terriers effectively controlled the game, preventing the opposition from scoring, and progressing to the semi-final of the County Cup.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Britt Sanderson has been scoring for fun lately, so will definitely be on the watch list. However, Serena Fletcher, Ria Montgomery also popped into the back of the net against Loughborough in the Cup match. Keep your eyes on these three, who look to add to their tally of goals.
