Huddersfield Town will head to Wembley for their final game of the 2021/22 Sky Bet Championship season, as they face Nottingham Forest in the Play-Off Final on Sunday 29 May 2022; 4.30pm kick-off.
Having beaten Luton Town 2-1 on aggregate, Town will arrive in the capital hoping to secure their return to the Premier League.
Standing in their way are Nottingham Forest, who overcame Sheffield United in penalties in their Semi-Final to pave their way to Wembley.
THE OPPOSITION
Nottingham Forest were bottom of the league with one point from seven games, when Steve Cooper took over as Head Coach in September 2021.
Following his arrival, Cooper’s side acquired the most points of any Championship team, climbing their way up the table to a fourth-place league finish.
The two sides have already faced each other three times during the current campaign, with both sides winning away in the league.
A huge game for two in form sides, it’s bound to be an entertaining final.
ONES TO WATCH
Brennan Johnson
Johnson joined Nottingham Forest’s Academy from Dunkirk as an eight-year-old. Working his way through the ranks, he made his professional debut at 18, as an 88th-minute substitute on the opening day of the 2019/20 season. The current campaign has seen the 21-year-old provide Forest with 25 goal contributions playing on the right of a front two, including a goal in each of the Reds’ Play-Off Semi-Final legs. The winger’s pace with the ball and clinical finishing make him an integral part of Cooper’s attack, and so Town will be looking to minimise his threat as much as possible. Johnson was named the Sky Bet Championship’s Young Player of the Season, and awarded the EFL Championship Player of the Month for April 2022.
Djed Spence
The 21-year-old joined Nottingham Forest on loan from fellow Championship side Middlesbrough ahead of the current season. Since joining, Spence has been a revelation for the Reds on the right of their back five with plenty of license to go forward. Offensively, the right back has the ability to find a pass or take on his defender one-on-one, averaging two successful dribbles per 90. Spence has been transformed defensively under Cooper; playing in a back five allows him to regain possession high up the pitch and mount attacks while his opponents are on the back foot. The current campaign has seen the youngster make 42 appearances, scoring two goals and contributing five assists in the process.
Brice Samba
The Congolese shot stopper was the hero at the City Ground in Forest’s Play-Off Semi-Final Second Leg, saving three penalties in the shootout and making a number of vital saves during the 120 minutes prior. The 28-year-old joined the Reds’ from French side Stade Malherbe Caen in the summer of 2019, putting pen-to-paper on a four-year contract. Since making his debut against Fleetwood Town in August 2019, Samba has been Forest’s number one for the last three seasons. The Reds’ keeper has kept 14 clean sheets in 40 appearances, and will be hoping for another heroic performance on Sunday.
