LEE NICHOLLS SIGNS LONG-TERM CONTRACT EXTENSION!

29 June 2022

Huddersfield Town’s current Player of the Year commits future to Club until at least 2026

- Nicholls extends contract until 2026, Club option for 2027
- 2022/23 Player of the Year and Sky Bet Championship Goalkeeper of the Year
- Comments from Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby

Lee Nicholls has today committed his long-term future to the Club, signing an improved contract that will keep him at Town until at least 2026!

A four time Blue and White Members Club Player of the Month across an eye-catching debut season as a Terrier in 2021/22, Nicholls made a clean sweep of end of season awards being named both the Blue and White Members Club and Hargreaves Memorial Player of the Season on top of selections within the official EFL Sky Bet Championship and PFA Team of the Season.

Having arrived on a free transfer from Milton Keynes Dons in the summer of 2021, Nicholls wasted no time in endearing himself to Town supporters after a heroic performance against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough to help win a penalty shootout in the First Round of the Carabao Cup.

His season continued to go from strength-to-strength, with his outstanding form central to both Town’s much improved defensive solidity and our run to a third placed league finish and the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final.

Looking to continue his form and improve next season, Lee can be seen wearing both 2022/23 Umbro goalkeeper shirts above, with the teal variation due to be made available to purchase through the Town Store in the near future.

A long-term deal, this contract will see 29-year-old Nicholls through the prime of his career until 2026, with the Club holding the option to extend for 2027 as well.

Commenting on the deal, Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby said:

“This deal is fantastic news for both the Club and Lee, and 100% the deserved result of his performances last season.

“He is the type of character that we want in our environment both on and off the field, and he became a key member of the dressing room in what was an extremely impressive first season.

“Having signed a two-year contract when he arrived, the length of this extension shows how mutual that happiness is and keeps a cornerstone member of our squad with us long-term.”

Adding his thoughts, Head of Goalkeeping Paul Clements said:

“I’m delighted for Lee. He’s come on so much both on and off the pitch since joining us, and he thoroughly deserves this extension. I’m delighted for the Club too, because this is a sign of what we’re trying to do – have good people who want to work hard and improve, which he’s done.

“He came in at 28-years-old and has shown how much he can still improve, so there’s no reason why he can’t continue to get better. He’s at an age and in a place in his life where stability is valued, but also retaining that desire to progress and improve, so it’s an exciting time for both Lee and the Club to get this deal done.

“We have a good crop of young ‘keepers at the Club, and to have Lee at the head of that group at an age where goalkeepers tend to have their best years is a really strong position to be in.”

Congratulations to Lee on the new contract and keep your eyes peeled on our Club channels for further news on the release of our 2022/23 goalkeeper shirt!
