2022/23 SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP OPPONENTS CONFIRMED

1 June 2022

Things to look out for as league line-up established for next season

- 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship line-up confirmed
- Plenty of local away days for Town fans this campaign
- Season begins weekend of Saturday 30 July 2022

With Huddersfield Town’s 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship opponents now confirmed, here’s a few things that stand out from next season’s line-up!

With the top three tiers of English football completed for the 2021/22 campaign, we now know the other 23 teams the Terriers will come up against in next season’s second tier.

New Opponents

Fulham, AFC Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest were all promoted to the Premier League at the end of the 2021/22 season, seeing Burnley, Watford, and Norwich City replace them in the Championship.

Similarly, Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United, and Sunderland arrive from League One, replacing Peterborough United, Derby County and Barnsley.

Much Anticipated Matches

Town will travel to the Stadium of Light for a Championship game for the first time in 23 years, with the Black Cats securing promotion to the second tier via the League One Play-Off Final.

On that day in 1999, Town were on the receiving end of a 2-0 defeat with Niall Quinn and Allan Johnson getting on the scoresheet with over 40,000 spectators in attendance.

Burnley return to the Championship after a seven-year absence, having finished 18th in the Premier League.

Town were victors in their last outing to Turf Moor, completing a 1-2 comeback in the Emirates FA Cup Second Round in January 2022.

Matty Pearson headed home the winner in the last five minutes of normal time after Josh Koroma had scored the equaliser with quarter of an hour to go.

A Very Northern League

Town fans will be happy to know that a significant proportion of teams in the championship this season are based in the North of England!

The Terriers will be joined by 11 other clubs located North of Birmingham in this year’s campaign, four of whom are from Yorkshire, meaning there will be at least eight derby days for the Terriers to earn bragging rights for throughout the season.

One of those derby days is just a 30-mile trip down the M1 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Newly promoted Rotherham United will be looking to solidify a place in the Championship having failed to spend more than one season in the division on three consecutive occasions.

Town are unbeaten in their last seven outings against the Millers and will be hoping to continue this streak when they face them on both occasions during the 2022/23 season.
