Danny Schofield took lots of positives – and areas to work on – from Town’s final pair of pre-season friendlies at Tranmere Rovers and Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Danny watched the 4-1 win over Tranmere Rovers, led by Narcis Pelach, on a live stream from the team coach before overseeing the 1-1 draw at the University of Bolton Stadium, and took a lot of lessons from both games.

Most importantly, he was delighted that most of his senior players got their first 90 minutes under their belts.

“That’s the most important thing for us,” Danny told HTTV. “We’ve had a short pre-season, so it was important to have these double game days and today was the final one of those. Getting minutes in the legs in both games was a real positive.

“As is always the case, there were real positives and some areas to improve in both games. The lads gave everything physically in both games, trying to outrun and outfight the opposition – that’s a real positive. We’ll focus on the areas we can improve, and there certainly are areas.”

It was noticeable how high the team pressed during the second game in Lancashire – more so than in most games in the 2021/22 campaign. Danny explained that switch as something he sees as a key component of our play.

“We want to stick the principle of pressing high and being aggressive. At some times against Bolton, it was successful, but then at other times here – particularly in the second half – they broke it too easily. That’s something we must address.”

One slight concern was a first half injury to Matty Pearson, who boarded the coach back to Huddersfield wearing a protective boot.

Danny detailed: “Matty will go for a scan tomorrow – fingers crossed on that one. Other than that, we’ve come out of both games unscathed.”

Now it’s down to business for Danny and the squad, with the Sky Bet Championship campaign getting under way on Friday night at home to Burnley!

He concluded: “There is work to do to prepare for the Burnley game, which is a tough challenge. To have the first game at home is exciting though!”
