Details of A62 Leeds Road Highway Improvement Works between Huddersfield Inner Ring Road/Southgate and Old Fieldhouse Lane.
We are writing to tell you that the major highway improvement works on A62 Leeds Road will last approximately 6 more months.
This is part of a long-running project by Kirklees Council to tackle this route’s issues with congestion, slow journey times and poor air quality, as well as safety. It covers changes along the length of the A62 from Huddersfield Ring Road to Old Fieldhouse Lane totalling 2km of improvements for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. The council will also create more green spaces alongside the road and improve sustainable drainage to avoid flooding on this busy commuter route.
Upgrades/improvements will be made at the following junctions:
- A62 and Bradley Mills Road
- A62 and St. Andrew’s Road
- A62, Hillhouse Lane and Thistle Street
- A62 and Gasworks Street (removal of gyratory to be replaced with two signalised junctions)
- Lower Fitzwilliam Street and Great Northern Retail Park
- A62/Leeds Inner Ring Road Southgate Junction
Colas SIAC Ltd will be carrying out the construction works who are very experienced in undertaking complex highway improvements on busy roads. To undertake the works safely, they will be carried out predominantly under lane closures, but there will also be occasional road closures and local diversions in place whilst the works are ongoing.
The impact of the scheme on all road users, businesses and other affect parties has been considered when planning the scheme. Unavoidably, due to the high traffic volumes and need to allow the contractor access to carry out the works there will be delays and disruption.
The highway improvement works has been broken down into 7 sections and the programmed dates for completing these works are as follows:
Section 1 – Between Old Field House Lane and Bradley Mills Road: Aug 2022 to Jan 2023
Section 2 – Barr Street/Bradley Mills Road Junction: May 2022 to Aug 2022 (outside of the football season)
Section 3 – Bradley Mills Road to Thistle Street: Apr 2022 – Jan 2023
Section 4 – Thistle Street to Gasworks Street: Aug 2022 – Sept 2022
Section 5 – Gasworks/Lower Fitzwilliam Street Junction: Apr 2022 – Oct 2022
Section 6 – Gasworks Street to Inner Ring Road/Southgate: Apr 2022 – Nov 2022
Section 7 – Southgate Inner Ring Road/A62 Leeds Road Junction: Apr 2022 – Nov 2022
Traffic Management will be in operation throughout the works, reducing the A62 carriageway to 1 lane in each direction, but there will not be any restrictions on existing traffic movements, except for temporary closures needed for the safe execution of the works. When temporary closures are in operation, diversion routes will be well signed.
The working hours for the majority of the works will be Mon to Fri between 07:30hrs - 18.30hrs. There may be very occasional works on Saturday mornings between 8:00hrs – 13:00hrs but in the main, no works are planned on Saturdays. Road surfacing works and other works that cannot be undertaken safely during the day will be carried out at night between 19:00hrs – 06:00hrs. There will be no working on public holidays.
Colas have 24/7 staff on standby to deal with any incidents regarding traffic management outside of the working hours. They will also check traffic management before and after any stadium events have taken place. The contacts for the contractor’s Traffic Safety Control Officers (TSCOs) are:
TSCO Days – Callum Dickson - 07539793524
TSCO Nights – Martin Clegg - 07785612935
Please contact the above should you want to report any issue pertaining to temporary traffic management (traffic cones/pedestrian barriers/traffic signals etc.)
- Access to properties and businesses during the works
Access to businesses and residential properties will be maintained. We are unable to guarantee vehicle access whilst resurfacing works are being undertaken directly outside of your premises due to the nature of the works requiring the use of large plant and vehicles. Traffic Management Operatives will be stationed at the closure points to advise on whether access within the works is possible. Pedestrian access to properties will remain unaffected. You will be advised of the upcoming road surfacing works in advance.
As these are essential works, we have served appropriate Streetworks and legal notices to work on the public highway network.
- Stadium Events
Stadium events will remain unaffected. There will not be any traffic restrictions on Gasworks Street, St Andrews Road and Thistle Street on days when events are occurring at John Smiths Stadium in particular on match days/evenings for Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants.
Post-match, when exiting the stadium via St Andrew’s entrance and heading towards town, supporters on foot will be able to use the footpath on the left hand side of the A62 until just after the Old Leeds Road junction on the left. Then, all pedestrians need to cross over Leeds Road to where Domestic Appliances are and head up on the right hand side to Southgate.
- Disruption to Bus Services
Bus services will remain largely unaffected by the improvement works and temporary bus stops will be positioned where the existing bus stop cannot be accessed. During the road resurfacing works, bus routes may change and you will be advised of any diversion routes in advance of these works.
You may also wish to contact your Local Councillors about these works, and they can be contacted as detailed below:

Cllr Will Simpson - 01484 221000 - cllrwill.simpson@kirklees.gov.uk
These works are an important investment and, unfortunately, there will continue to be delays, disruption and a certain amount of noise caused by them. However, we can assure you every effort will be made to minimise the impact. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding regarding the works and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Yours sincerely,
Richard King
