Following the conclusion of their four-day training camp at St. George’s Park on Friday 22 July 2022, Huddersfield Town’s Head of Physical Performance, Paul Bower, discussed pre-season and the upcoming campaign.
Speaking to htafc.com, Bower started by looking at the challenges the squad have faced in the short break between the Play-Off Final and pre-season preparations getting under way.
“It’s been really challenging. Going back to the Play-Off Final, then we’ve only had four weeks, the squad who trained all the way up to May.
“Most teams probably had six or seven weeks and trained for an extra three weeks, so that’s been a challenge because it means that the lads have only had four weeks to get back up to speed.
“They’re a great group of players so they came back in good shape, then you’ve got to integrate new signings, players who went on international break – Sorba Thomas for example.
“So, it’s been a real challenge for us, trying to get the group aligned, but in terms of the lads from the Play-Off Final, they are ready to go.”
Town’s Head of Physical Performance went on to discuss the hard work the players have put into their intense training sessions whilst at St. George’s Park.
“Yesterday we pretty much did two of the hardest sessions of pre-season.
“They went back-to-back without much rest for the players in between, and they came out and absolutely smashed it.
“The players are in great shape and they are such a good group, the work they put in all the time when they go on the pitch, the intensity is frightening at times.
“It’s really good to get everyone out of their comfort zone and see them in a different situation where they’re not on a football pitch, where they may have a little bit of fear or they’re not in their normal frame of mind.
“Everyone gets to know the new signings, and everyone gets to integrate a little bit better, so it’s been really good.”
Bower also commented on the main aim of this year’s pre-season training camp.
“It’s just been about giving Danny Schofield and Narcís Pèlach the time on the pitch to work the tactical things that they want to do.
“From that, you get the new signings coming in and they have to integrate into that so there has got to be a level of professionalism for it to work.
“The lads have been brilliant, and the staff have been brilliant, and we’re heading towards Burnley in good shape!”
