Town progress in Emirates FA Cup

- Huddersfield Town 1-0 Barnsley
- Town through to Fifth Round of Emirates FA Cup
- Duane Holmes on the scoresheet

Duane Holmes made it two goals in as many games as Huddersfield Town secured their place in the Fifth Round of the Emirates FA Cup with 1-0 win over Barnsley at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The game took a while to settle, with both getting used to extremely wet and windy conditions.

The first chance of the game fell Town’s way. Some great work from Pipa, Carel Eiting, and Sorba Thomas down the right set up Jordan Rhodes, who’s first time flick just hit the side netting!

The Terriers built on that momentum, breaking the deadlock four minutes later. Thomas curled a great pass towards Josh Koroma, who flicked a first time header into the path of Duane Holmes, who sent a low ball past Jack Walton to give Town the lead!

The 22nd minute almost saw Barnsley score through an own goal as Naby Sarr’s attempt to cut out a cross hit the inside of his own post and bounced back out, allowing him to clear for a corner. VERY lucky for Town!

The Terriers were forced into a substitution as the clock showed half an hour, with Pipa making way for Ollie Turton.

Town almost doubled their lead in the 33rd minute thanks to Jon Russell! The midfielder burst through midfield before playing Koroma in, but the latter saw his effort well saved by Walton. Russell then tried to hit home the rebound from range, but it was blocked.

Koroma was booked a minute later for a foul on Williams.

Russell came close again just moments later! The Terriers piled on the pressure after a corner, with a deep cross from Thomas flicked goalward by Russell, but there was too much on it and it dropped over the bar.

As the clock continued to count down to half-time, Town came incredibly close to getting their second! Koroma raced clean through after robbing Jordan Williams, but overran the ball as he was approaching the box. The clearance fell to Holmes, who fed Thomas, but his low cross-shot went out for a throw-in!

The second half got under way, and with it came Town’s second yellow as Turton brought down Josh Benson.

The second half was much fairer in possession than the first, with Barnsley’s half-time substitutions making a difference.

A spell of pressure from the visitors ended with Carlton Morris trying his luck from an acute angle to curl the ball past Jamal Blackman. Thankfully, his 65th minute effort flew comfortably wide.

The 78th minute saw Town unlucky not to get anything following a corner. Second half substitute Danel Sinani took it from the left, but it was headed away. Sinani crossed again, and Sarr met it to head it back across the box, but nobody was there to apply the final touch.

Turton had the goal in the back of the net in the 82nd minute, but he was offside.

A chance for Sinani fell seconds later! A great break from Rhodes fed the Luxembourg international, but his left footed effort flew just wide.

The 88th minute saw Town hit the post! The Terriers made a further two substitutions in the form of Tom Lees and Danny Ward, which saw their energy renewed. Josh Ruffels’ cross deflected into the path of Danny Ward, who saw his shot hit smack off the post!

As if that wasn’t enough, Thomas tried his luck just seconds later! Ruffels crossed from the left, with Sinani putting it into the back of the box for Thomas to shoot. His first effort is saved, and his second on the rebound was over the bar!

The first minute of added time saw Barnsley put the ball in the back of the net, but Michal Helik’s header was ruled offside!

The third minute of added time saw Russell come INCREDIBLY close to making it 2-0 to Town, but he shot just wide!

The final whistle blew, seeing Town walk away having secured their place in the Fifth Round of the Emirates FA Cup!
