JAHEIM HEADLEY: WE DID WELL AS A TEAM

23 February 2022

Full back reviews Hibernian game

- Jaheim Headley reflects on B Team’s 1-0 defeat to Hibernian
- Young Terrier pleased with team performance
- Full back on what he’s made of the season so far

Huddersfield Town B Team full back Jaheim Headley believes that despite the narrow defeat, his team held themselves well against Hibernian’s Development Squad on Tuesday morning.

An end-to-end game, James Scott’s strike was the difference at full-time.

Town got out the blocks fastest, with an early drive from Pat Jones down the wing giving the Young Terriers their first chance. Unfortunately, one too many touches saw the ball roll out play.

As the clock showed half an hour played, Hibernian almost had a chance, but Jacob Chapman’s outstretched arm was able to divert the ball.

Town had their best chance of the first half just it was about to come to a close, but Jones’ strike took a deflection off the post!

The second half started as the first had finished, with the Young Terriers being awarded a penalty in the 51st minute. Danny Grant stepped up to the spot, but saw his effort go over the bar.

Just after the hour mark, Hibernian took the lead. Chris Mueller cut the ball back across the face of goal and Scott was on hand to tap in.

Despite our best efforts, the hosts were able to keep Town at bay for the remainder of the game.

Speaking after the game, Headley gave his thoughts on the fixture.

“It was a very good challenge.

“They had a good set up and a strong side out against us.

“It was tough to play in the conditions – it was very strong winds.

“Overall, I think we did well as a team, but we should have left with more.

“We had a few chances in the game that we just didn’t finish.”

The full back went on to explain how the journey to Edinburgh and the experience of a long distance away day will help prepare them for life in the First Team.

“These games definitely do help prepare you.

“It gives you an idea of those away journeys and getting off that coach and being able to perform.

“I think we all handled it well.

“Our warm-up was pretty flat, but Worthy spoke to us and got us into the right mentality.

“We didn’t travel for five hours to get there and be trampled on.”

The B Team went into the game off the back of a 2-0 Premier League Cup win over Newcastle United, a game in which Jaheim scored!

“In training, we work a lot on partnerships between the winger and the full back.

“In that scenario, Danny Grant was my partner, and he was inside, so we could drag the full back inside of them.

“Their formation gave me plenty of space and wide and then a good pass from Loick Ayina – I knew that I could take that on the run. I took a touch forward and then just dropped in.

“I have been working on using my right foot in training, so I’m glad it came through!”

The 20-year-old also took the time to speak about how he’s found the season so far.

“At the start of the season, I’d definitely have wanted to have taken more by this point, but I’ve enjoyed it, I’ve enjoyed it thoroughly.

“I think we’ve really kicked on as a group and been getting results in games that really matter.

“We’ve through to the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup now, and as a group I think we can progress even further in that.

“My view of the season so far has been very positive.”
