A poor first half performance cost Town away at St Andrew’s as first half goals from Scott Hogan and Przemyslaw Placheta cost the Terriers.
Having made two changes to the starting line-up with Tino Anjorin and Jack Rudoni starting in place of Duane Holmes and Josh Koroma, an early goal from Scott Hogan at close range gave the home side a perfect side.
Building on that, Birmingham had the better of the first half and scored what was a game winning second right on the stroke of half time, with an awkward strike from Placheta hit too well for Nicholls to save.
Reacting well in the second half, Town played far more bravely going forward and looked much more like themselves, with the likes of Anjorin and Rudoni getting on the ball in the attacking third much more often.
Town eventually halved their deficit via the right boot of Danny Ward, with the forward played through on goal really nicely by Sorba Thomas after intelligent work from Turton and Russell.
